What is a Hexcap? + Easy Install Guide

A mountain bike (MTB) topcap is the small but essential component that sits at the top of your bike’s headset, right above the stem. It’s used to preload the headset bearings and keep your steering smooth and secure.

STEP 1:

To swap your top cap out effectively, loosen the pinch bolts on your stem before taking apart your cap. Then loosen the headset top cap.

STEP 2:

Replace top cap and tighten the top cap on, your top cap acts as a compression mechanism to ensure your headset is tight before your stem clamps it all together, therefore it is unnecessary to over torque this bolt.

STEP 3:

Generally 3-4nm will be perfect for tightening your top cap, If you don’t have access to a torque wrench a good gauge is to tighten the top cap until you can’t rotate the spacers under your stem with your fingers.

STEP 4:

Then tighten your stems pinch bolts and your ready to ride!
